"A no-nonsense guide for business leaders committed to change."
It’s just as well this book didn’t come out when I was a manager as I might well have got the boot. Or at least that’s what I thought when I first picked it up, but despite its provocative title, No More Sh*t Managers is more about turning ‘yerbuts’ into ‘can-dos’ than it is about breaking eggs to make omelettes.
Jo Wright was herself a broken egg at one time, made redundant she was inspired to go on a journey and learn how organisations might unlock the potential of their workforces and embed trust. It seems obvious, when you think about it, that this is how business should work. Instead we seem to have spent generations building power structures at work that we feel give us control, keep everything orderly, target-focused and… a bit cr*p, really.
Jo talks about visualisation, engagement, high performance and sustainable change. But this doesn’t just come from the board room, it travels up and down and in and out of the organisation, thriving on communication and powered by the collective energy of the workforce.
It’s heady stuff which might seem a million miles from where most businesses are now, often built on fear of failure rather than the excitement of opportunity. Jo Wright describes a coaching rather than managing approach. The sort of thing you’re more likely to find in a top Premier League football club than you are in the lower kick and run divisions. Change can be delivered in steps, and this book breaks those down, keeping it simple, straightforward and logical.
No More Sh*t Managers signals an end to those tired old appraisal, report and measurement carrot and stick techniques, and instead introduces real behavioural change and engagement from every department.
