"Family feuds and business rivalries play out in this dramatic story of personal and professional competition. "
Shallow Stock by D R Shores follows Wynter McGlynn on a week where she’s set to face three battles against her corporate and family rival, Julian Dayton. Heads of competing businesses clash in court in a civil case about industrial espionage, in the boardrooms as they both seek to purchase the same tech company and outside of work in the annual triathlon. Both highly driven individuals, their methods for success differ and the fight to come out on top strays far from professional.
This is a fast paced plot that has so much going on it reminds me that I am definitely not cut out for the cutthroat world of business, although it was an intriguing whirlwind to step into the characters’ shoes for a brief time. I can see how comparisons have been made to shows like Succession, with internal family disputes requiring just as much negotiation as the ones in the corner offices. For me, neither Wynter nor Julian were particularly relatable, their determination and focus leaving only small opportunities to make emotional connections to the characters. However I found the narrative fascinating and it kept me engaged throughout. The overall backdrop is set out with similar high-stakes detail, with an investigative journalist keen on exposing top business people and the City PD working to investigate a claim of smuggling from McGlynn’s properties.
Filled with drama, high-stakes, secrets and underhand deals, this is an entertaining and dramatic story.
