This book manages to deliver the technical and tactical history in a way any reader could understand while also highlighting the personal stories of the seafarers. The utilisation of the U-boats and submarine warfare transformed maritime warfare. The shocking shift from the “gentlemanly” protocol of allowing plenty of time for the sailors to abandon ship to attacking in ways that limited all possibility of survival really hammered home the harrowing experiences of the seafarers and risks they took by working on the seas. The stories told in ‘Killing Shore’ are poignant and important. This book is a vital addition to wartime accounts; it is a must read for any history and military buff and K. A. Nelson does a tremendous job in honouring the seafarers by telling their stories.
