Marily is the daughter of a good witch and just four years old when she is lured by an evil potion and is turned evil herself. Growing quickly and becoming the most powerful witch around, Marily, now known as Badfreaky is feared by everyone. But will she stay evil forever?
Badfreaky - The meanest witch by Konstantinos V. E. Adamopoulos is an imaginative story translated from Greek by Marina Katsarou. Each page is filled with bright hand-drawn illustrations by Leoni Katsarou that support the storytelling really well. Although the summary says this book is aimed at teens and young adults I would say that the writing style would perhaps also suit a younger audience. The traditional fairy tale set up and simpler sentence structure means that I think readers around 9/10 years old could be a target audience for this book, possibly younger. Although the story flows well I think that it could benefit from some further editing. The naming structure is unique, the euonyms help out in describing a character, but some are quite similar which could cause confusion- I got confused between Goodwhitefate and Goodwhitebeard when I was reading.
I think that the story idea has great promise, there is a lot of detail packed into a pretty short read and the illustrations are pretty good. It’s an easy enough read for children aged 9 upwards who are interested in fairy tales and fantasy stories.
