An eerie location, a grisly murder scene, federal government interest and the unfathomable discovery of a very large footprint has the potential to create a media storm in this latest case for chief medical examiner Dr Kay Scarpetta. While still working to get her office in order, Scarpetta and her team are about to be let in on a few secrets in order to figure out who would commit these violent murders and why. But who else might be watching?
Long standing fans of Patricia Cornwell’s chief medical examiner will be thrilled for her return in this 27th novel in the Kay Scarpetta series. Readers who have been enticed to the series by the plot of Unnatural Death will easily be able to step into Kay Scarpetta’s shoes as we make our way through this case with her, though may find themselves looking to earlier books in the series to answer a few questions that pop up along the way.
The level of detail for every step of the case is forensic, from the contents of the crime scene to the contents of the cupboards in the autopsy rooms. This alongside the incisive first person narrative made me feel like I really was in the head of Virginia’s chief medical examiner. It was also refreshing and felt significantly more authentic to have a medical examiner main character that doesn’t turn Sherlock and try to solve the case on her own. But don’t worry, there’s still plenty of thrilling and chilling moments as we discover who was behind this brutal double murder. I enjoyed my first meeting with Kay Scarpetta and I am now intrigued about what the rest of the series has to offer.
