LoveReading Says
A fabulously wild ride of a fantasy novel, which also feels beautifully inclusive, and so it has been chosen as one of my Liz Picks of the Month. Mythical creatures are appearing in Bezim, magic is on the rise alongside thoughts of revolution. This is the second in the Burnished City Trilogy by Davinia Evans, which began with her debut Notorious Sorcerer. Do start at the beginning, this is a wonderfully intricate and fully formed world of magic and the novels deserve to be read in order. There is so much to be discovered, from an immersive fantasy world of different planes, through to alchemy, sword play, and adventure, and then there are the incredibly thoughtful elements detailing societal issues that create balance within the story. Three main characters appear, the different strands run alongside and link in with each other, creating space to grow into and understand the different factors affecting Bezim. It meant I was always on alert and and yet felt at home in the structure of this world. I loved how the characters grew and changed as they met each challenge, each one is known to me. The plot sizzles and the ending left me full of anticipation for the last in the trilogy. As entertaining as it is stimulating, Shadow Baron is a fabulously action-packed read.

Shadow Baron Synopsis
Siyon Velo might be acknowledged as the Alchemist. He may have even stabilized the planes and stopped Bezim from ever shaking into the sea again. But that doesn't mean he has any idea what's he doing-and it won't be long before everyone knows it.
Then mythical creatures once confined to operas and myths are spotted around Bezim. A djinn invades one of Zagiri's garden parties, and whispers of a naga slithering through the Flower District are all Anahid hears at the card table.
Magic is waking up in the Mundane. It's up to Siyon to figure out a way to stop it, or everything he's worked hard to save will come crashing down.
