In The Night House, Jo Nesbo, master of detective thrillers, plunges headlong into creepy territory with an edge-of-your-seat take on coming-of-age horror. It’s inventive, it’s straight-talking, it’s straight-up twisting and twisted, with a classic outcast character and movie-style, edge-of-the-woods eeriness.

After the deaths of his parents, 14-year-old Richard goes to live with his aunt and uncle in a remote town — “a little sh*thole,” in Richard’s words. “And I had no idea what sh*tty little kids in sh*tholes like Ballantyne did to stop themselves from being bored to death.” Suffice to say, Richard’s experience turns out to be anything but boring.

First, up one of his classmates goes missing, and (understandably) pretty much no one believes outsider Richard when he claims the kid was pulled into the receiver of a remote telephone booth. Finding an ally in Karen, and with a second kid missing, Richard sets about investigating what dark forces might be at play.

Creepy, weird, and wildly inventive, The Night House is also riotously entertaining.
