"A delightful and beautiful poetry anthology offering wisdom, laughs, solace, inspiration, and everything in between, for every day of the year."
A Poem to Read Aloud Every Day of the Year edited by Liz Ison, is a greatest hits compilation of some of the best-loved poets and their poetry through history.
It’s got The Williams: Shakespeare, Wordsworth, and Blake; British Poet Laureates Carol Ann Duffy, John Dryden, and Alfred, Lord Tennyson; American poets Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; and some new favourites like Mary Oliver, Lemn Sissay and Spike Milligan.
In my experience, the beauty of daily anthologies is that they provide a gift for every day of the year, which is why I love them. You can never be sure from one day to the next what you’re going to read, and the element of surprise is what makes them special. The anthology also helpfully includes a first line index, so if you can’t remember the name of a poet, but you do remember how the poem begins, you’ll be able to find your favourite.
Poems are best listened to, rather than read, and editor Ison chose the poems that would create moments of joy and awe each day when spoken. She works with the British charity The Reader, which uses the power of reading aloud to transform lives of reading groups in schools, care homes and community spaces throughout the country. This would make a fantastic gift for anyone who loves poetry, people who would like to learn more about it, or for families to read from after dinner.
A poem a day might not keep the doctor away, but it couldn’t hurt to try.
