"A multi-faceted debut romance that balances tenderness, compassion and friendship with a slow burn reconnection to create a delightfully well-rounded read. "
Multiple chance meetings bring childhood friends then enemy Daniel Rosenberg back into the life of Liyah Cohen-Jackson, making them both face their past in order to rekindle their relationship and boost their careers. When Liyah and Daniel have a chance meeting on a plane 14 years after last seeing each other at a Jewish summer camp we’re clued in that something happened between them leaving Liyah angry and Daniel remorseful. What comes next is not only a story of romance and reconciliation but explores much deeper themes of gender bias, being Jewish and multiracial, and recovery from sexual assault. Liyah’s wit will leave you with a smirk for most of the story. Daniel’s compassion towards Liyah’s experiences are swoon worthy and makes you shout even louder at the page for Liyah to truly see him and understand her own feelings.
When Liyah and Daniel are put together to work on a new exhibition for Liyah’s work, I was kicking my feet at the forced proximity that working on such a big project would bring, and Rachel Runya Katz didn’t disappoint. Add to that the only one bed trope, grumpy / sunshine vibes and slow burn romance and this book gets a full house in romance fiction bingo for me. With its sparkling and vibrant cast of characters, an adorable cat cameo, tenderness, compassion and a friendship group I would love to join for happy hour; this diverse friends to enemies to lovers story is a cracking debut and one I’ll definitely be recommending.
