An entertaining fantasy story full of wit and sarcasm as one self-confessed nerd gets a quest of his own - to join the fight to defend Earth and the realms beyond. We are introduced to Grey, lover of movies and video games as his solitary life turns upside down. Kidnapped while taking a rare walk and taken to the mystical realm of Eader, Grey finds himself in a world with mythical beings and discovering he’s not quite as ordinary as you might think. As Grey learns more and uncovers memories from his past, his powers are central to the fight to save The Eader and defeat the sinister Cox, who is determined to spread as much darkness as possible. I found Grey to be a likeable character, his pop culture references were witty and also relatable - trying to understand the new world he finds himself immersed in with a catalogue of movie references. We also heard from Darby, fellow Fior and part of the council. I liked that Darby’s perspective really helped with world building, giving a broader perspective about the battle to save the light as Grey gets used to the new world he’s been brought into. With a varied cast of characters and a twisting plot, this is an engaging fantasy story with a great premise that fellow self-confessed nerd will enjoy.
