An absorbing, tension-filled, and quietly chilling read. Journalist Rebecca Connolly can’t resist the call of a story about a missing person while on holiday. While this is the fifth Rebecca Connolly Thriller and I would recommend starting with Thunder Bay, you could actually read this as a standalone. Thoroughly intriguing and captivating, this series also feels as though it could be real. I love Rebecca’s determination to follow a story through to the end, her tenacity stands her in good stead, but also places her in danger. What I particularly love about this series is how the settings join the lead characters in the spotlight. Here the Caledonian Forest stood vividly in my mind, and I felt the years of history it would have witnessed. Author Douglas Skelton writes with sensitivity as echoes of eerie sadness spread through the Black Wood and onto the page. I couldn’t help but compare the relationship between Rebecca and Stephen with the story she is investigating. Jolts of action, and increasing suspense ensure Children of the Mist is a compelling read.
We come from the mist, and to the mist we will return . . .
A memorial service witnessed in the historic Black Wood of Rannoch sets Rebecca Connolly on the trail of a baffling story. Fergus MacGregor told people he was going to Pitlochry for the day. He was never seen again. Five years later his deeply religious mother stills holds a memorial in the place Fergus loved because of its connections to the outlawed MacGregor clan, the Children of the Mist.
What happened that day in this last vestige of the great Caledonian forest?
Does a family feud hold the key? Does an old recluse have the answers?
Or is there something malevolent hiding among the ancient trees?
' Children of the Mist is an enjoyable read that has some very nice twists and turns as it moves towards its conclusion' -- Ken Lussey - Undiscovered Scotland
