When Hollywood actress Goldie Saint Helen comes out of a coma after a car accident, the amnesia she suffers leads her to believe she’s in fact Gypsy Star, a character from the 60s in a script and a detective looking for a missing girl in and amongst a CIA conspiracy. Encouraged to play along to save his wife's stress until her memories recover, Blake Deco has to negotiate his wife as she still hunts for a missing girl that doesn't exist, the press hungry to see a star at their worst and more sinister dangers as he fights for the life they had before the accident. A story in which a character believes she’s a hippy detective from the 60s that also happens to be a famous Hollywood star with access to countless connections and resources, is never going to have the makings of a realistic or indeed an all that relatable plot (not that it ever claims to be). However, if you’re looking for a read with lots of drama and a dash of Hollywood sparkle, then this would be of interest to you. While you can read ‘Far Out’ by Khaled Talib as a standalone, Blake Deco’s comfort in danger, past deeds (saving Goldie from a kidnapping) and military background may seem incongruous for a screenwriter husband of a Hollywood star. The events of the previous book ‘Gun Kiss’ are referenced several times in the book, and could answer questions about Blake’s character. ‘Far Out’ is not a typical thriller. It’s not too gritty, as I’ve said it has a Hollywood sparkle that makes the plotline slightly over dramatic and reduces any tension. The incidents involving Goldie / Gypsy’s amnesia also adds an element of humour and unpredictability to the plot. With the truly villainous elements of the plot focusing on the dangers of conservatorship, any reader with modern pop culture knowledge will understand the sinister nature of the threat in this book pretty quickly. Overall I found this book to be an entertaining light read, perfect for offering a bit of escapism.
