"This is a twisting, snake like, psychological mystery that I thought was really well executed and made for an enjoyable afternoon reading."
A gripping psychological mystery with serpentine twists and turns. ‘The Snake That Bites Its Tail’ by Bob Farrand follows unreliable narrator and older main character Robin Farnham, a 72 year old retired publisher battling through the symptoms of his Alzheimer's to try and piece the details of his life together after a murder accusation resurfaces. Alongside the memos written by Robin, we also follow the traumatic childhood of Jane, who has run away from abusive adoptive parents and is looking for a better life. The two narratives seem separate and as I read I was keen to discover what the link between them would be. As you flash between Robin’s past, his present discussion with the psychiatrist Dr Lakmaker, and Jane’s story you’re kept intriguingly off kilter, never sure when and where the timings line up. I found that the characters are multi dimensional and well-drawn, helping to lead you into the story and care about the outcome. The unreliable nature of the narrator in Robin, due to his dementia diagnosis and the questions surrounding his involvement in a murder managed to keep me on tenterhooks, as I tried to figure out where the storyline was going. I thought that The Snake That Bites Its Tail has a really interesting premise and I didn’t quite figure out how exactly all the threads provided by the author would weave together. I felt that not one errant detail was missed in trying up the ending of this story. This is a twisting, snake like, psychological mystery that I thought was really well executed and made for an enjoyable afternoon reading.

This book truly is unputdownable and has cost me the best part of last night’s sleep. I hope the publisher puts it up for all the awards for which it qualifies. It deserves to be widely read so Bob Farrand’s toil is rewarded and his charity benefits. Brilliant job. Very well done.

An ingenious plot.
I have just finished reading Farrand's novel and must say, I enjoyed it enormously. He has woven a fascinating story and told it very well. In some ways, I enjoyed the first part more than the second, as the writing was pacey, had me engaged, and much of it, inspired. The final poker game in the illicit gaming club had me on the edge of my seat, as detail piled upon detail.... Read Full Review
