"Inspired by his friend, ‘Flid’ by Colin Stewart is fictional tale of Kevin, a larger than life and exuberant character determined to live life his way, in spite of the impact thalidomide had on his prenatal development. "
An interesting read with plenty of vivid characters, the narrator, who is writing a book on Kevin’s life relating a search for independence, love and companionship. Covering the successes and heartaches of his life from starting school to finding love in later life, this is a character-focused story with plenty of humour while also pointing out without ceremony the lack of adaptations experienced by those with disability.
Thought provoking and entertaining in equal measure this is a powerful narrative that celebrates life in all forms. There’s no time to wallow in the lower moments as Kevin seems to pick himself up and push continually forward, moving onto the next anecdote. I liked the format, the perspective of being inside an author’s head as he writes about Kevin’s life.
I think that ‘Flid’ is a detailed and vibrant story that will appeal to those looking for a rich, positive, character-driven narrative.

This was a fantastic, well written novel.
This was a fantastic, well written novel. I found it very thoughtful and most certainly inspirational! The story starts from childhood into adulthood, and we explore the challenges Kevin faces throughout, whether it be love, his friendships, and his disability. The characters are likeable, and I have to remember that these are all real-life events. Also, there are comical parts in this book, which adds another great depth it's not all sadness....
