Debbie Macomber has to come to mean a hug in a book, for me. You can rely on her for a heart-warming and uplifting pick me up. Her books are a read-in-one sitting comfort, guaranteed to warm the cockles of your heart. 

When Hope and Cade meet at the animal rescue centre, they have both experienced terrible loss, at a low point of their lives and without family and friends to support them through the turbulence. Buoyed by the pull and calming powers of the ocean they settle in the tight-knit community that is Oceanside. 

Smothered by expectations John Cade Lincoln Junior signed up to serve his country, crushing the relationship with his family. As we open the book the ex-soldier is in the dock about to plead guilty. Despite his illustrious military experience and his purple heart, he has anger issues and refuses to have counselling or physical therapy.

And then there's Hope. Hope by name, hope by nature. A kind and beautiful soul who has also lost those close to her. She teaches US history in the local high school and is a counsellor in the afternoons. She agrees to volunteer at the animal rescue centre as a help to her neighbour and as a way of meeting people. And then she falls in love with Shadow. Through patience and perseverance she saves the dog from ultimate doom and transforms him, enabling him to trust and love once again.

As the protective guard around her heart starts to melt we see a brighter future for Hope. There is light in the dark. As Cade watches from the sidelines from his court-mandated community service, we see his barriers also crumble one stone at time.
