It’s incredible to think that for 100 years this year the BBC has been making radio and TV programmes which have led the world in broadcasting standards, and the whole journey is charted here. There is a strong sense of nostalgia throughout as you return to some of the landmark dramas, comedies, documentaries and so on, that are a real part of our shared history.
The idea of adding puzzles within the pages is a clever one, because it compels you to stay with the page, interact and test your memory or problem skills in a similar way as a modern museum might do with its exhibits.
The BBC Puzzle Book does have the feel of an exhibition in the way it is arranged, with photographs, snappy headlines and deeper text where you want it. It is also arranged thematically, so aside from the timeline at the beginning, the sections are given over to different broadcasting formats or genres wherein specific programmes are highlighted.
The overall experience of turning the pages of this book is to realise how formative the BBC has been to our lived experience, and how important it is to our collective memory as a nation. And we are a nation who loves a puzzle.
