"This is a deeply personal story, exploring one person’s life with Schizophrenia in a way that educates those who haven’t experienced the condition. "
A continuation of a memoir into day-to-day life with Schizophrenia. ‘A Good Life: The Perception of Perfection an Autobiography’ by Karl Lorenz Willett follows on from ‘The Memoir of a Schizophrenic’. Keeping the successful structure, the author shares a diarised account of his life from 2016 to 2020. Seemingly in a slightly more positive place than at the end of his first book, the author now documents his work to reduce his antipsychotic medication intake, with his faith in God and himself still as strong as ever. This book continues to demonstrate the author’s strength of character while also candidly explaining the experience and impacts of taking antipsychotic medication prescribed to him by doctors. This is a deeply personal story, exploring one person’s life with Schizophrenia in a way that educates those who haven’t experienced the condition. The book also reflects on a range of other topics such as race, poverty, navigating the benefit system and family and relationships as the author reflects on his life. I still feel that the writing could benefit from proofing and editing, as I feel that this would help to fix some of the grammatical errors that stops the author’s message from coming across effectively and will help the account to have more impact. The Introduction and Author’s Notes I think are in most need of some further proofing, as sentence structures and errors can make it quite confusing to read. I would recommend that those interested in reading this book start with ‘The Memoir of a Schizophrenic’ as it is referred back to at various times throughout this book. While 'A Good Life' is educational for those with no experience of Schizophrenia, I think that the author’s resilience and faith also shines through and offers the wider reassurance that no one is alone in their struggles.
