Connecting the pandemic-like spread of right-wing populism with aggrieved masculinity (i.e. “a seething sense of rightful virility wrongly denied”), Karen Lee Ashcraft’s Wronged and Dangerous makes a convincing argument for shifting studies of populism away from only considering issues of class. Rather, Ashcraft’s position puts gender to the fore as she explores whether right-wing populism might be fuelled by the idea that traditional “manhood” is under attack.

Enlivened and backed by personal experiences and case studies, the book is underpinned by a belief in the value of “lateral empathy” i.e. rather than “confronting the anger itself”, we should “slow down to perceive what animates hostility.” This approach is central to the author’s focus on how populism spreads, as opposed to only considering what it is. Indeed, this thought-provoking work concludes with a list of ways we might “interrupt the circuits of aggrieved masculinity” in order to save humankind.
