Melinda Salisbury is a superlative creator of totally convincing worlds, where everyday reality brushes up against the supernatural or in this case the mythological. We are utterly convinced by The Island setting where the Greek Gods are still worshipped and everyday life is punctuated by rituals and superstitions.
Our narrator Corey is utterly convincing too, feeling heartbroken and betrayed by her first love and, what is worse, by her best friend Bree. They have committed the unpardonable sin of dumping her and getting together. But she fears that her wish for vengeance went too far when Bree is found dead and fears also that the mysterious boy she kissed at the festival might have something to do with it. She pursues Bree into the Underworld, discovers the boy is Hades and with the help of Hermes who can move between the worlds and The Furies who want to claim her as one of their own, she has to confront who she is and what she really wants. Her internal debate about the nature of justice and the alternating pulls of vengeance and mercy throughout the intricate plot are enthralling.
This is a fascinating modern and thought provoking take on the myth of Persephone and Hades that deals with universal themes of friendship, love and the positive power of nature. It might even inspire an interest in gardening! The writing is lyrical and the characters compelling and I am sure this will add to the author’s many fans.

About
Her Dark Wings Synopsis
Her Dark Wings is a potent, passionate modern-day take on the Persephone myth.
On an island, near the entrance to the Underworld . . . Corey and Bree's friendship has always been unbreakable. Or so Corey thought, until Bree betrays her in the worst way possible, and then Bree's sudden death leaves Corey heartbroken and furious. But the Underworld calls to Corey too: enraptured by the passionate Furies, she is taken to the realm of a god who is unyielding, cold and irritatingly arrogant.
It will change her, because the more she learns about herself, the more Corey's own power stirs. But can she resist her darkness within?
