Coming to the book with only a vague sense of Leatherhead, I’m now confident I wouldn’t need a satnav to guide me. This leafy, monied town in Surrey, where Giedroyc grew up, is the perfect place to start the story of a privileged family who fall on hard times. In many ways this book is a classic tale of family fortunes gone wrong. It features the tropes we are all familiar with: a materialistic wife with no purpose, an alpha male husband, and pampered children. When their lives take a turn for the worse, how do they cope with life without all the trimmings? Giedroyc’s wit and warmth make this an engaging read, much like the author herself.
