A Maxim Jakubowski selected title.
An impressive late life fictional debut by a major American art critic, this noir and evocative thriller plunges the reader into the tapestry of the 1990's Manhattan art world with with a striking and distinct sense of place and time. The wife of a prominent member of the artistic community is found shot to death in their SoHo loft, after which her husband confesses to the murder. Art dealer Jackson Wyeth however has strong doubts about his culpability as there is tenuous evidence that the husband was not even in the country at the time. Against a background of buzzing, upmarket and glamorous art galleries, decadent parties, wanton beauties and an effervescent New York full of private vices and excitement, the unpredictable plot twists come fast and furiously as the story plumbs the depths of the human heart and terrible sins with maestria and elegance. Truly impressive.
