When was the last time you read a western? Well, the time has come. Following the Booker-nominated success of Patrick DeWitt's The Sisters Brothers, the pseudonymous Stark Holborn brings an equally picaresque voice to the Old West in a series of tales, initially published online, of Sister Thomas, a nun stranded in the wilderness whilst California-bound and her fortunate rescue by love struck rogue Abe Muir. Their adventures, regular cliffhangers and encounters after Sister Thomas Josephine is accused of bloody murder, read like a penny dreadful saga of constant ups and downs, hangings, escapes, gunfights and abductions through which they survive against all odds and are forced to confront a chilling nemesis in the person of deceptively handsome Lt. Theodore Carthy. If only all movies were so good!
