Alicia desperately wants a baby. She is nearly 40 years old and has never gone through a pregnancy before. Uncertain of what is best to do, she starts researching the possibility of adoption. She soon learns about private 'gray' adoptions, and in the process is told to consider adopting a baby from Ukraine. Unbeknownst to Alicia, adoptions in Ukraine are being controlled by its largely illegal porn industry with strong links to the Russian mafia, Bratva. From orphanages in Eastern Ukraine, babies born in both Russia and Ukraine are being provided with Ukrainian birth certificates and offered up for adoption by wealthy westerners desperate for a child and unable or unwilling to go through the usual channels. When Alicia discovers the Russian mafia's seedy world of underground illegal adoptions during a trip to Ukraine, she writes an exposé for the New York Times. This proves to be a deadly mistake causing the Russian mafia to try and silence her for good.
