On the eve of International Women's Day the celebrations have started early with the Women's Prize for Fiction announcing thier 2023 longlist. This is the 28th year of the prize, which works to showcase outstanding, ambitious, original fiction written in English by women from anywhere in the world.

The 2023 longlist includes both debut and bestselling authors. We loved Maggie O'Farrell's last Women's Prize for Fiction winning novel, Hamnet, and we're thrilled to see her latest book The Marriage Portrait make this year's longlist. Former winner Barbara Kingsolver also returns to the 2023 longlist with Demon Copperhead. Previously shortlisted authors Natalie Haynes, Laline Paull and Elizabeth McKenzie have also made this year's longlist. Nine of the 2023 longlist are debuts - Jennifer Croft, Jacqueline Crooks, Camilla Grudova, Louise Kennedy, Priscilla Morris, Sheena Patel, Cecile Pin, Parini Shroff and Tara M Stringfellow.

From the sixteen authors that have made the longlist, there are seven British authors, five Americans, one Irish, one Canadian, one Zimbabwean/American, and one French. There are some common themes across the books selected for this year's awards including the power that stories, art and music have to heal, obsession, social media, the political vs personal, poverty and violence, power, tyranny and sisterhood.

Without further ado, here is the 2023 longlist:
