The Nielsen Bestseller Awards yet again honoured authors whose books had surpassed significant sales thresholds in 2023.

The event returned in person to Ham Yard Hotel in central London this year, in partnership with BolognaBookPlus, with awards presented by comedian Shaparak Khorsandi.

199 million print books were bought in the UK in 2023, with a value of £1.83bn, with around seven in every 10 books purchased in print formats.

Based on UK sales volumes, the awards honoured authors whose books had surpassed sales thresholds — Silver (250,000 sales), Gold (500,000 sales), and Platinum (1,000,000 sales).

Four titles achieved Platinum status inducting them into the "21st century Hall of Fame", which now includes 157 titles.

The Platinum Hall of Fame is home to authors and titles that have achieved outstanding sales within the UK. Titles that sell over one million copies, and authors who have sold over five million copies across their entire catalogue, are inducted to the Hall of Fame.

This gallery is a monument to these titans of literary output – a celebration of the author, the book and of the wider cultural impact that sales of this magnitude signify. This glittering collection contains a diverse range of titles, from classic to contemporary, across multiple genres, across a huge range of literary styles, reflecting the diverse literary tastes of UK consumers.

Two authors received Author Platinum Awards on the night, having sold over five million copies across all their titles: Susan Lewis who celebrated 50 bestselling novels in 2023, and Victoria Hislop, whose career has included The Island which is already a Platinum Bestseller in its own right.

Andre Breedt, Managing Director of Nielsen BookData, said: “We are thrilled to be able to host these awards once again in person and celebrate the success of authors and the teams that support them. My thanks to the BolognaBookPlus team for all their support helping us to re-establish this popular annual event. The Bestseller Awards are unique, recognising the achievement of any author across all genres by the ultimate measurement, book sales.”
