Hello again from Lovereading! October is a big month in American literature. It was in October 1492 that Christopher Columbus discovered America and without that significant event we would never have had the wealth of authors we do from that continent. Henry James, E.E Cummings, Edgar Allen Poe and Arthur Miller - all October babies and cases in point! Back on this side of the Atlantic, this month, we have a whole bunch of great suggestions for you to curl up with, as the nights begin to draw in. Enjoy!

Author of the Month – Favouring The Brave, Nicholas Evans

With his first class degree from Oxford, we’re pretty sure Nicholas Evans would have excelled at whatever it was he chose to do. We’re very glad, though, that he decided to move from TV journalism into writing novels for otherwise we might never have read The Horse Whisperer, a novel that was of course one of the biggest selling novels of all time. We’re lucky though to even see sight of his latest work, The Brave, because he and his wife so nearly died of mushroom poisoning a couple of years ago. He’s on regular dialysis and is on the waiting list along with so many others for a new kidney. The Brave is the brilliant and gripping tale of a boy obsessed with cowboys and Indians, who is thrilled when his sister falls in love with a real-life cowboy. However, events soon take a very sinister turn.

Standing out in the crowd this month a novel so special…

When Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections was published in the aftermath of 9/11 it received huge media attention and massive sales. It’s taken Franzen until now to complete his next novel. Called Freedom it has already been variously described as ‘a masterpiece’ and ‘quite possibly the book of the 21st century’. Yes it’s that good and we’re sure readers will be equally enthusiastic having read it. Read a free Opening Extract today…

Past Comment – Our Guest Editor, Juliet Gardiner

Juliet Gardiner is one of the most hugely respected commentators on British social history She was the editor of History Today magazine and is also the author of the critically acclaimed, and bestselling, Wartime. Widely praised by critics and featured as our Book of the Month in September, her latest publication, The Blitz: The British Under Attack, is a beautifully crafted and revealing history of the devastation that galvanized Britons’ resolve in the face of Hitler’s relentless bombing regime 70 years ago. The Best books – as voted for by Independent Booksellers and their customers

At Lovereading we love being independent with the ability to pick the best of the books for you to discover on-line. Good independent bookshops offer readers the same passion and pickiness on the high street so winning an independent booksellers prize is highly valued by authors and their publishers. The 2010 winners have just been announced and the publisher HarperCollins scored a double scooping the adult category with the medieval epic Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel and the children’s category with Running Wild by the former Children's Laureate Michael Morpurgo. If You Like … You’ll Love – even more handpicked connections!

Many of you have told us how useful our If you like … you’ll love section is. We like the idea that we can help readers discover new titles easily, that are immediately their cup of tea. In fact, we take it very seriously and all of our like-for-like connections are hand-picked and not computer driven (unlike some other online book businesses!). With this inmind, we have added yet more selections to this popular section of the site. Sarah Broadhurst has used her encyclopedic knowledge to link authors with other authors similar in style. Why not try it out and see for yourself?

Grand Larsson – A Special Treat for Crime Fans

Millions of people have already read Stieg’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo but there are millions more who haven’t. If you’re one then we do urge you to put aside some time to read his addictive Millennium Trilogy. Sadly there won’t be anything else from Stieg as he died before the first in the trilogy was even published and even though the stories are making into films the books are a million times more enjoyable. For those already hooked on Larsson’s writing, we are this month tipping you thewink of an author duo, Roslund and Hellstrom, who have been discovered by the same publisher as Mr. Larsson (Quercus) and are now being heralded as his rightful successors. Three Seconds is an utterly explosive read that will have youhanging on to your seat as you experience the rollercoaster ride that is the hallmark of this duo. This, their 5th novel, has already been translated into over 17different languages. An that’s not it, there is a great chance to win a boxed set of Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy (worth £70) as well as a copy of Three Seconds. If you like crime fiction, you won’t want to miss this.
