Reading matters, and books change lives. That's the LoveReading ethos in a nutshell. We’re here to share our love of books to help you find novels and non-fiction gems that’ll give you pleasure, expand your horizons, make you think, and make you feel alive.

With that in mind, read on for five new year, new reading resolutions that'll transform your 2024, and beyond. Just like the very best books.

1. Set goals

Let’s be honest — this is likely to be one of those well-intentioned resolutions that gets broken. There are times when work and other commitments take over everything. That said, it’s worth considering setting some 2024 book goals, especially if you struggle to make time to read, or find yourself idly scrolling your phone when you could be enjoying the pleasures of a good book.

Given that goals are always a great motivator, why not set yourself a target to read a certain number of books through the year (or month)? This will help you make reading a habit that’ll reward you with a bounty of benefits. To find out what they are, read our feature on why reading is good for you, from boosting your brain, to lengthening your life.

2. Try new authors

It’s easy to fall into a reading slump when we stick to the same writers and writing styles.

While we all have favourites we can rely on to deliver, there can be big gaps between writers’ new books, which may make us slip out of the reading habit. In addition, we might outgrow writers and styles over time, and feel a little “meh” when reading the same old, same old stories.

To dodge that book bullet, and have no excuse for a slump, keep an eye on our debut writers’ category, browse our Star Books, explore our themed Collections, and sign up to watch our free LitFest events. You might also want to read our Collection of fiction about fresh starts.

3. Pick a genre you think you don't like

Related to trying new authors, why not make 2024 the year you read outside your comfort zone and dive into a genre you don’t usually read? For example, it might be the case that you think you don’t like fantasy, or aren’t into historic novels.

If that sounds familiar, think again. Within every genre, at least a few novels are bound to float your boat. Who knows? You might just find yourself falling head over in heels in love with an entirely new world (or universe). Browse our fiction genres for inspiration.

4. Read around the world

Picking up on the theme of how reading expands our horizons, and returning to that resolution of setting goals, you could also make 2024 the year you read more books from around the world. Short of being able to travel far and wider for extended periods, there’s no better way to discover a rewarding, edifying range of people, places, cultures, ways of life, and ways of thinking.

Not sure where to start your round-the-world reading journey? Our curated Collections cover voices from many regions, countries and continents, from book-aneers of the Caribbean and incredible Hispanic writers, to novels by Asian authors. Then there’s French fiction with va va voom, awesome writers from Africa, incredible books set in Australasia, exceptional novels by Chinese writers, and novels set in Norway. You could also take a look at our translated fiction category. Buckle up for an exhilarating ride.

5. Learn a new skill, or refresh sleeping skills

As a new year dawns, thoughts invariably turn to wanting to learn new things, or reviving latent interests.

Maybe cooking up incredible Christmas feasts has inspired you to do more of it. Maybe you’ve resolved to rouse dormant language skills ahead of your 2024 holiday. Maybe you want to save money through creating your own clothes, or doing your own DIY. It goes without saying that there are brilliant books to help you realise all those dreams, and investing in one (or more) will surely help motivate you to stay the distance.
