Norway holds a very special place in my heart, I’ve travelled the coast from Oslo in the South, round to Bergen and Tromso, right up to Skarsvag and Kirkenes in the far north. It is a stunning country, full of welcoming friendly people, and yet the darkest of dark stories can be found there. I’ve chosen twelve novels set in Norway, ten by Norwegian authors and two by authors from the UK. The translators involved all deserve a round of applause, they help connect us to the place while highlighting the unknown. I’ve included historical fiction, family drama and relationship tales, a young adult novel, and of course crime, as Nordic or Scandi Noir is a much loved genre of crime fiction. A sense of darkness binds these twelve stories together, it may lurk in the shadows or roar with ferocious energy, it has the ability to unsettle, to provoke and agitate. I can highly recommend visiting Norway by opening these novels, while the sense of place is absolute, the characters and plot all crackle with energy. Enjoy.
