Mums should be celebrated every day of the year in my opinion. Is that because I am a mother? Perhaps. But more likely is that the minute I became a mum, I realised everything and my eyes were opened. My mum rocked and she was my rock. She had been there every step of the way. My biggest champion. My loudest cheerleader. And I hadn't realised, I hadn't appreciated it.
So, give your mum a big hug today and show her how much she's appreciated. And as Mother's Day is coming up, give her an extra squeeze and maybe a gift to show her how much she means to you.
Mother's Day is our annual celebration honouring our matriarchs, the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on different days in many parts of the world, and this year in the UK, Mother's Day is on Sunday 10th March.
Now what can you get to show that you care? Chocolates and flowers are gorgeous but fleeting. How about giving her the gift of a story she can fall in love with and return to again and again? Help her find her next favourite author or next favourite book.
If your mum is an avid reader, and always has her head in a book, you might find it tougher to buy a book as a present. Don't forget that here at LoveReading we now sell gift cards - perfect if you're unsure of what to buy your mum. Perhaps we can also suggest checking out our debut authors channel. These are all first time authors, books that have made a lasting impression on us, and we think you'll want to keep an eye on as they flourish and grow into their roles as authors. Definitely ones to watch, and we think the book loving momma in your life will get a real kick out of being there from the get-go.
Recent debuts we have adored in hardback form include Anna O by Matthew Blake, The City of Stardust by Georgia Summers and The Storm We Made by Vanessa Chan. And of course The Women, the latest historical fiction by Kristin Hannah is an absolute star of a book. From the brutalities of war, government cover-ups and sexism, to love, lust, sisterhood and surviving the worst, it is at once deeply intimate and richly sweeping. Something uplifting? We highly recommend The Art of Belonging by Eleanor Ray. Oh what a gorgeous, heartwarming, and emotionally astute read this is. It doesn’t shy away from the darker times that life offers and creates a realistic view of family life, yet has feel-good stamped onto every page.
Paperback debuts we have loved recently include The Daughters of Madurai by Rajasree Variyar, Don't Swipe Right by LM Chilton and The Miniscule Mansion of Myra Malone by Audrey Burges. Something for everyone, no matter what genre of fiction they love.
We also have a glorious selection of more gifty books, that would be a perfect present for the bibliophile mum. Check out The Cat Who Saved Books, The Book Club Journal, and The Watkins Book of English Folk Tales. The perfect Mother's Day gift is Letters of Note: Mothers by Shaun Usher - a compulsive collection of the world's most entertaining, inspiring and powerful letters with mothers at their heart. It includes letters by: Caitlin Moran, Sylvia Plath, Martin Luther King Jr., George Bernard Shaw, E.B. White, Laura Dern, Louisa May Alcott, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Bette Davis, Richard Wagner, Martha Gellhorn and many more. Hint hint, I'd love a copy!
If your mum loves a more gritty read, then check out Edel Coffey's Breaking Point, a "chilling, emotional thriller [that] explores the burdens placed on working mothers in the wake of a high-flying doctor’s tragic mistake." Or Cornwell still knocking it out of the park in Livid, the latest page-turning thriller featuring her medical examiner Scarpetta. And especially as it's Mother's Day, we can't create this collection without mentioning Abigail Burdess' Mother's Day. It's a psychological thriller about motherhood. It’s dark. Pitch black. And I loved every twisty turn.
Something a little different? Try Red Side Story by Jasper Fforde: "an absolutely cracking story set in a futuristic UK, served with sides of humour, social and political commentary, and a huge dollop of originality."
And hot off the shelves, we have Mother Hens by Sophie McCartney which is a page-turner if I ever saw one. Sophie of Tired and Tested fame has built a cult following for her no-holds-barred approach to parenting. She is a hoot. And this read is laugh-out-loud funny with a capital F. Four friends, three nights, two murders – and one helluva adventure.
For more humour, Yoga for Stiff Birds is a perfect little gift book. Loosen up with a smile on your face... Marion Deuchars has practiced yoga for many years, and well knows the benefits it brings. Now she shares that passion with her illustrated character Bob the Bird, whose expressive poses will charm you into a reviving session of yoga breathing, stretching, posing, and mindfulness.
If non-fiction is more your mum's bag then you must check out our non-fiction channel for some of our recommendations. The Enchanted Life by Sharon Blackie is an absolute treat: "A practical, thoughtful, and wise book to help us connect with the world around us and learn how to live an enchanted life." We also love her Hagitude: "An eloquent and engaging offering of a world of hope and possibilities to all the women about to enter or who are already in, the second half of life."
This Is The Canon provides "a beautiful opportunity to rethink your reading lists and discover books from around the world." And Stephen Ellcock's books are stunning gifts. In The Book of Change "prepare to be challenged in the best possible way while you view images that travel through time and around the world."
If madre is a lover of poetry, the Jane McMorland-Hunter poetry books are absolute gems, and the perfect gifts. My 11 year old daughter surprised me with A Nature Poem for Every Day of the Year this Christmas, and I treasure it. The perfect start to my days.
