William Kentridge (born Johannesburg, South Africa, 1955) is internationally acclaimed for his drawings, films, theatre, and opera productions. His method combines drawing, writing, film, performance, music, theatre, and collaborative practices to create works of art that are grounded in politics, science, literature, and history, yet maintain a space for contradiction and uncertainty.
Karen Marta is an editor who has worked across other titles on the artist William Kentridge: Triumphs and Laments, Walther König (2017) and William Kentridge: Notes Toward a Model Opera, UCCA / Koenig Books / Marta and Cosentino (2017). Both of these books were also designed by Garrick Gott. Karen and Garrick both also worked on previous HWP titles Luchita Hurtado (2021) and Gustav Metzger: Interviews with Hans Ulrich Obrist (2024).
