Samuel Basch was Maximilian's personal physician during the final months of the Empire. After his return to Europe in 1868 he joined the medical faculty at the University of Vienna, where he invented the non-intrusive measurement of blood pressure now used throughout the world as the blood-pressure sleeve. For this achievement, he was knighted by Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria-Hungary. Fred D. Ullman is an independent linguist and historian.
