Mark R. DePue served five years in the U.S. Army and twenty in the Illinois Army National Guard, retiring in 2001 as a lieutenant colonel. He received his Ph.D. in history from the University of Iowa in 2004 and is currently director of oral history at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield, Illinois.
