KATHLEEN SHINE CAIN is Professor of English at Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts, where she has also directed the Writing Program and the Women's Studies program. She is the author of articles on writing centers, detective novelists, and contemporary American writers, as well as several textbooks, the most recent of which is Living in the USA: Cultural Contexts for Reading and Writing (1994). Her research interests also include American women writers and the personal memoir as literary genre.
