From an early age, Joseph Proietto showed a great interest in all branches of science, including physics. He studied Medicine at the University of Melbourne. In first year medicine, he obtained a first-class honour for physics. He then chose to do research and did a PhD on the subject of insulin resistance. He eventually set up his own laboratory and for 40 years studied Type 2 Diabetes and obesity. In his spare time, he read physics books for lay people. While at university, he started having doubts about some of the teachings of the Catholic Church, starting with transubstantiation.
