Jonathan Whitehead completed his M.A. in Contemporary European Studies at Reading University before moving to Madrid and then Alicante where he has lived and worked since 1982. He has dedicated his time to researching the fate of Republicans after their defeat in the Spanish Civil War both inside Spain and abroad. In 2019 he published his second book Spanish Republicans and the Second World War; an account of the role of Republicans forced into exile by Franco's new regime, many of whom continued their fight against fascism in the armed forces of France; Britain and the USSR, and in the French Resistance.
