Liu Hongwu is a Changjiang Scholar of Africa Studies appointed by the Ministry of Education of China,Qianjiang Scholar of the Zhejiang provincial government, Director of the Institute of African Studies, doctoral supervisor, and deputy head of the academic committee at Zhejiang Normal University. Liu is Vice President of the Chinese African Studies Association, deputy chairman of the Chinese Society of African Historical Studies, Vice-President of the Chinese Society for African History and council member of the Chinese-African People's Friendship Association. Liu, who studied in Nigeria and Tanzania in his youth, has visited over 30 countries in Africa. He has been Chief Expert on major projects supported by the National Social Science Fund and on Ministry of Education Philosophy and Social Sciences Key Research Projects.
