D. M. Jones was born in Bradford to immigrant parents from the former Yugoslavia. She was raised in Denholme (West Yorkshire), a small village where her parents worked in Fosters Mill. Dani wrote her first play at primary school and went on to Keighley Girls' Grammar School, where she spent most of her time singing, dancing and getting into trouble. At the age of seventeen she joined the civil service and stayed until 1975 when she left to have her first baby, with another following a year later. When she was forty, she returned to education and gained a BA (Hons) in home and community studies. After gaining a PGCE in further education, she went on to study counselling and psychotherapy. She had a variety of jobs which all involved people, in the social sector and in the private sector, along with running a successful private practice in counselling.
