Ini berdasarkan firman Allah: Sesungguhnya Kamilah Yang Berkuasa mengumpulkan Al-Quran itu (dalam dadamu), dan menetapkan bacaannya (pada lidahmu); Oleh itu, apabila Kami telah menyempurnakan bacaannya (kepadamu, Dengan perantaraan Jibril), maka bacalah menurut bacaannya itu; (Surah Al-Qiyamah, 75:17-18) Manakala dari segi istilah pula, al-Quran ialah kalam Allah yang bermukjizat diturunkan kepada Muhammad melalui perantaraan Malaikat Jibril dalam bahasa Arab, diriwayatkan secara mutawatir dan membaca setiap hurufnya adalah ibadah, bermula dari Surah Al-Fatihah dan berakhir dengan Surah An-Naas. Al-Quran disifatkan sebagai nur (cahaya) kerana ia memberikan cahaya keimanan kepada orang yang berada di dalam kegelapan serta kekufuran. Selain itu, al-Quran juga menjadi cahaya yang menerangi jiwa orang yang selalu membacanya dan menghayati isi kandungannya.
