Heretics: Heresy and Orthodoxy in the History of the Church
In this galloping collection of twenty pointed essays, G. K. Chesterton (1874–1936) nimbly punctures the philosophical pretensions of modern non-Christian thinkers and artists—heretics, as he calls them. Chesterton good-naturedly takes on contemporaries Rudyard Kipling, H. G. Wells, James McNeill Whistler, and even his good friend George Bernard Shaw, exposing the muddled logic of their popular ideas with his characteristic wisdom and razor-sharp wit. He also begins to lay the groundwork for Orthodoxy, his subsequent account of a rational and coherent Christian faith. G. K. Chesterton (1874–1936) was one of C. S. Lewis’ primary mentors in apologetics, and an influence even in his conversion. Novelist, poet, essayist, and journalist, Chesterton was perhaps best known for his Father Brown detective stories. He produced more than 100 volumes in his lifetime, including biographies of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Thomas Aquinas. His Everlasting Man, which set out a Christian outline of history, was one of the factors that wore down Lewis’ resistance to Christianity. Chesterton was one of the first defenders of orthodoxy to use humor as a weapon. Perhaps more important was his use of reason to defend faith. How to Pray and How to Study the Bible
As valuable as when they were first published a century ago, Torrey’s two disciple-making classics—How to Pray and How to Study the Bible—encourage believers to grow in the knowledge and love of God. Brimming with practical wisdom, How to Pray describes varieties of biblical “prayer that availeth much.” How to Study the Bible details seven fruitful methods of inductive Bible study. Now together for the first time one book! R.A. Torrey (1856–1928), an evangelist, author and educator, was a prolific writer with over forty books to his credit. He was a major force in helping shape the Bible school now known as Moody Bible Institute. For over a century, countless readers have found in Andrew Murray a trustworthy guide to the deeper Christian life. As a pastor, evangelist, educator, and writer driven by concern for the spiritual guidance of new converts—and for revival in long-time believers—Murray penned some of the most enduring devotional classics of Christian literature. Though he ministered in a deeply divided nation, his vision seemed blind to race, class, or political persuasion. And from a remote corner of South Africa, his preaching, teaching, and writing would eventually fuel spiritual awakening with a worldwide impact. Absolute Surrender reflects Murray’s longing for a closer walk with Christ, and it calls us to a life of holiness and virtue, empowered not by our own strength but by the indwelling Holy Spirit. Once the most deeply cherished book in English-speaking households other than Bible itself, John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim's Progress is the allegorical tale of Christian the pilgrim on his journey to the Celestial City. Along the way, Christian encounters both worthy companions and dreadful adversaries. Although this book was written more than three hundred years ago, this stirring spiritual narrative still bears the power to challenge and encourage readers on their own spiritual journeys. When Jesus “made himself nothing . . . taking the nature of a servant,” He modeled for all believers true humility. Murray calls this “our true nobility” and “the distinguishing feature of discipleship.” In twelve brief but powerful chapters, Murray journeys through Scripture and Christ’s life, underscoring the utmost need for humility—as opposed to pride—in the Christian’s life. Prayer, although an essential ingredient of the Christian experience, remains mysterious and foreign to many Christians. Realizing this, a well-known (but anonymous) Christian wrote this volume to teach Christians about the power available to them through prayer. According to The Kneeling Christian, all real growth in the spiritual life—all victory over temptation, all confidence and peace in the presence of difficulties and dangers, all repose of spirit in times of great disappointment of loss, all habitual communion with God—depends upon the practice of secret prayer. The Practice of the Presence of God
More than three hundred years ago, a French monk named Brother Lawrence discovered how to live in God’s presence moment by moment. His reflections have become the devotional classic The Practice of the Presence of God. Discover his secret as you read this timeless classic! Brother Lawrence was born Nicholas Herman in Lorraine province, France in about 1605. He came from a humble background and was an unlearned man. He became a Christian in 1629, and after being a soldier and a footman for some time, he entered the religious community of the Carmelites in Paris in about 1649. It was there, as a lay brother, that he took the name of Brother Lawrence. He remained in the community until his death in 1691. While in the community he worked most of the time as a helper in the kitchen; it is in this specific surrounding that he became known for his simple, practical faith. Originally published in French as La pratique de la prâesence de Dieu. In this classic of Christian apologetics, Chesterton lays out a sort of “spiritual autobiography”—how he personally came to believe. Chesterton considered it a companion book to his earlier work Heretics. Where Heretics was a collection of essays defending the Christian faith, Orthodoxy is Chesterton’s own story of how he came to believe that faith. G. K. Chesterton (1874–1936) was one of C. S. Lewis’ primary mentors in apologetics, and an influence even in his conversion. Novelist, poet, essayist, and journalist, Chesterton was perhaps best known for his Father Brown detective stories.
