Coping Successfully With Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a skin condition affecting some two per cent of the population, and occurs when the skin cells replace themselves too quickly. There are many different types, but the most common is chronic plaque psoriasis. The cause is unknown, but triggers are thought to include skin injury, sore throat or chest infections, certain drug treatments, sunburn and stress. A specific form of arthritis is related to psoriasis. Psoriasis usually appears as red, scaly patches that reveal fine silvery scales when scraped or scratched. These patches may itch and feel uncomfortable. It's most common on the knees, elbows and scalp, but can appear anywhere on the body. Some people with psoriasis become withdrawn and don't socialise or form relationships because of the way people react to the appearance of their skin. Treatment and self-help can however be effective, as this book shows. Topics include: • Psoriasis and your health (arthritis; more rarely, other complications such as circulation and bowel problems); • Treatments such as emollients, skin softeners and topical drug therapy applied to the skin, such as vitamin D derivatives, tar preparations, steroids, dithranol preparations and vitamin A derivatives; • Ultraviolet B light therapy, systemic medication (methotrexate, ciclosporin, aitretin, hydroxycarbamide), and biologics designed to block specific molecules in the immune system that trigger development of psoriasis (etanercept, infliximab, efalizumab); • Complementary therapies such as acupuncture, homeopathy and herbal therapy; Psoriasis in children; guttate psoriasis (a type common in children after a respiratory infection); • and, Emotions and confidence.

Free Capital: How 12 private investors made millions in the stock
Wouldn't life be better if you were free of the daily grind - the conventional job and boss - and instead succeeded or failed purely on the merits of your own investment choices? Free Capital is a window into this world. Based on a series of interviews, it outlines the investing strategies, wisdom and lifestyles of 12 highly successful private investors. Each of them has accumulated £1m or more - in most cases considerably more - mainly from stock market investment. Six are 'ISA millionaires' who have £1m or more in a tax-free ISA, a result which is arithmetically impossible without exceptional investment returns. Some have several academic degrees or strong City backgrounds; others left school with few qualifications and are entirely self-taught as investors. Some invest most of their money in very few shares and hold them for years at a time; others make dozens of trades every day, and hold them for at most a few hours. Some are inveterate networkers, who spend their day talking to managers at companies in which they invest; for others a share is just a symbol on a screen, and a price chart shows most of what they need to know to make their trading decisions. Free capital - money surplus to immediate living expenses - is the raw material with which these investors work. It can also be thought of as their psychological habitat, free from the petty tribulations of office politics. Lastly, free capital describes the footloose nature of their assets, which can be quickly redirected towards any type of investment anywhere in the world, without the constraints which institutional investors often face. Although it presents many advanced insights and valuable investment hints, this is not an overly technical book. It offers practical ideas and inspiration, with revealing detail and minimal jargon, making it an indispensable read for novice and experienced investors alike.

Britain has one of the highest prevalence of hay fever in the world, with around 12 million affected. This dramatic level is thought to be due to lifestyle factors and environmental pollution, and is in line with the rising prevalence of allergies in general. Hay fever causes misery – sometimes all the year round - and is implicated in other conditions such as asthma, sleep apnoea, and allergic irritability syndrome in children. This book looks at remedies both orthodox and less orthodox. It explains how doctors treat hay fever, and considers options other than medication, including immunotherapy. Allergy testing is also covered. The importance of nasal douching is stressed, with step-by-step instructions. Also includes self-help tips and alternative remedies.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterised by pain in the muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Other symptoms include fatigue, sleep problems, allergies, anxiety, irritable bowel syndrome, headaches, morning stiffness and problems with short term memory and concentration. Increasing recognition of fibromyalgia means that diagnosis and treatment are increasingly likely, but self-help is still key. As well as tried and tested advice on how to reduce pain, boost energy levels and help with regular sleep, this new edition includes the latest in treatments, such as the popular therapy guaifenesin. It also looks at how pain is experienced, explores the possibility that fibromylagia may be due to a rogue gene, and clarifies the difference between fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Jack the Ripper: The 21st Century Investigation
There have been countless attempts to solve the brutal murders committed by Jack the Ripper more than a hundred years ago. It seems that almost everyone has their own theory and their own suspect, ranging from the reasonably likely to the entirely preposterous. What this most famous of British criminal cases has always required is a professional eye to analyse with all the benefits of modern investigate techniques. Now that has been provided in the shape of the man most qualified to solve the case: former British murder squad detective Trevor Marriott. His long and arduous investigation dispels the rumours, fantasies and urban legends which have for so long stalked through the shadowy world of this vile killer. The results are startling: for many years it has been accepted that Jack the Ripper killed only five, but now, it can be revealed that up to nine were victims. And, most astonishing of all, a new prime suspect never previously considered has emerged, with evidence linking him not only to the Whitechapel cases, but to murders all over the world. "Jack the Ripper: the 21st Century Investigations" reveals the Ripper's true identity at last, and the fate that befell him.

Some 4.5 million people in the UK suffer from tinnitus which may range from the well-known ringing in the ears to musical hallucinations. Often associated with the elderly, it can occur at any age, even in quite young children. The sound itself is as individual as the person suffering with it, but common descriptions include a whistle, a whine, a high-pitch ringing or a buzzing. Tinnitus can be a far more troublesome symptom than hearing loss itself, affecting sleep, concentration, confidence, and mood. The emotional aspect of this disorder cannot be overlooked. Indeed, tinnitus has been described as an 'emotional barometer' - it is often more intrusive when people are under stress. ""When you notice that the tinnitus is demanding your attention, ask yourself if there is anything else that is on your mind that you need to sort out,"" suggests Christine Craggs-Hinton. Other topics include: • avoiding drugs and foods that may affect the ear (diuretics, cheese, caffeine) • taking enough fluid to keep the system hydrated • relaxation and quiet time to 'rest' the ear • how your doctor can help; complementary therapies • sound therapy • behavioural techniques for those who feel their tinnitus is 'in control'

Living with heart failure may sound like a contradiction in terms, but, contrary to popular myth, the heart does not fail, or stop, but labours on under increasing disadvantages. An estimated 900,000 people are currently living with heart failure in the UK, a figure which is set to increase as the population ages. Heart failure also affects an estimated 14 million Europeans and nearly five million Americans. Heart failure is a disorder in which the heart loses its ability to pump blood efficiently throughout the body, and there are different types depending on which side of the heart is affected. It may be caused by several different conditions and may be chronic, or acute. Once established, it tends to persist, but with lifestyle management and drugs, it is possible to delay its progress and to achieve better quality of life and health. Many of those with heart failure will also have or have had some other heart problem such as heart attack, angina, or valve disease. Heart failure needs urgent addressing: some 40 per cent of heart failure patients die within a year of their first admission to hospital, yet modern drugs such as ACE inhibitors and beta blockers can be very effective. Public awareness about heart failure is limited, and education much-needed. This book looks at a variety of issues including: • coping on a daily basis • dealing with physical limitations • giving up work (including advice on benefits) • reaction to diagnosis, mood swings, stress, depression and anxiety • how heart failure can affect your relationships and sex life.

Kember experiences fear, loneliness, boredom, and at one point, contemplated suicide. Yet his wry sense of humour never quite deserts him. The book will include previously unseen notes made by Norman Kember, who kept a journal during his captivity and invented games with his fellow captives.
