Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) was already an established figure in the fields of philosophy, biology, sociology, anthropology and with an established interest in evolution, when Darwin produced his ground-breaking On the Origin of the Species (1859). But Spencer viewed evolution in wider terms – including ‘the social organism, ethical and metaphysical matters.' He was keen to offer a complete framework of the philosophy of evolution and, in 1862, published his First Principles. He divided this substantial work into two parts: (I) The Unknowable and (II) The Knowable. As the Spencer Society expressed in the bold, unequivocal introduction: ‘The purpose of the work is an inquiry into the doctrine of Evolution, which is to be the medium for unifying all knowledge.' Writing within a defensively Christian society, Spencer (an agnostic and a rationalist) opens Part I The Unknowable by presenting his views on ‘metaphysics and theology'. In Part II, The Knowable, Spencer the scientist, the sociologist, the anthropologist comes to the fore. ‘Evolution is continuous throughout all time and is still in progress,' he maintains. Spencer argues this can be seen in terms of physical and biological evolution, which evolves from simple to complex forms; and social evolution which evolves from homogeneity to heterogeneity. While time has dealt critically with some of his proposals, First Principles was a strong influence on thinkers and writers in the 19th and 20th centuries, including William James, Henri Bergson, George Eliot, Leo Tolstoy, D. H. Lawrence and Jorge Luis Borges. First Principles remains an important source work for the growth of evolutionary ideas during its exciting early times. This recording is based on the 6th and final edition.

Of Consolation: To Marcia, To Helvia, To Polybius
These three ‘Consolations', written by Seneca to his mother and two friends, have been described as ‘the crowning achievement in the canon of ‘consolation letters'. But sentimental they are not, for they emerge from the writer's deep-seated commitment to Stoicism, where individuals are exhorted to inhabit qualities of virtue, positivity, resilience, and indifference. This recording opens with Seneca's consolatory letter to Marcia, who, after three years, was still mourning the death of her son. He recognises her exceptional personal qualities and what benefits she has brought to her family, having rescued her father's legacy as a historian following his death. He cites other noble Roman mothers who lost their sons, and enjoins her to adopt a more Stoic attitude of mind: we are all destined to die, he declares. The second letter is to his mother sent after he had been exiled to Corsica by Emperor Caligula. He counsels Helvia not to mourn his absence – not least because he himself does not feel grief at the prospect of his own exile. He acknowledges the trials of his mother during her life, remarking ‘ill-fortune has given you no respite'. But her grief at the absence of her son may be put to one side in the knowledge that as he has ‘never trusted in Fortune,' she can be comforted that her son is not discommoded. And history points to far harsher separations. The final letter is to Polybius, Emperor Claudius's Literary Secretary, who was mourning his brother. Written while in exile, Seneca's unwavering commitment to Stoic philosophy is again in evidence. One of Seneca's principal suggestions is for Polybius to distract himself from grief by an increasing involvement in work. These ‘Consolations' have been widely admired from Classical times to the present, but are periodically questioned for their emphasis on a somewhat detached approach to grief and bereavement. Not all can manage imperturbability in such circumstances. Nevertheless, there is a steadiness and emotional calm in these missives, which Seneca himself displayed when ordered to commit suicide by Emperor Nero.

Audiobook
The original Latin name of this important essay by Seneca, written around 60 CE, was De Beneficiis, which is why it is generally translated as ‘On Benefits'. However, it is more usefully titled ‘On Favours', because this is what it is essentially about: the giving and receiving of favours, with all the implications of such transactions. Seneca is concerned with demonstrating that while such exchanges can be straightforward and beneficial to both parties, often there are pitfalls and hidden complications that, sooner or later, result in problems. Though some centuries later Shakespeare summed it up concisely with Polonius's warning: ‘Neither a borrower nor a lender be,' Seneca is well aware that in all levels and activities of society, benefits or favours play an undoubtedly crucial role. This was certainly true of Roman society, but little has changed since. Seneca deals with the subject in detail, considering the purposes of role of the giver, of which ‘kindness', he says, is an important aspect – but not the only one by any means. Similarly, the role and attitude of the receiver, plays its part – and ‘gratitude' is again only one response. Seneca's background as a Stoic underpins his approach, so he warns against the inappropriate giving and receiving of benefits, which extend far beyond just material goods: it includes influence, wives, patronage and all manner of vice and immorality. In short, Seneca points out that the giving and receiving of favours can be, and often is a pernicious and dangerous affair, resulting in later disaster. Something to be exercised with caution.

Love, Pain and Money: The Making of a Billionaire
John Caudwell is one of Britain's wealthiest, most successful – and most colourful – businessmen. John was just six years old when he made a promise to himself that he would make enough money to give huge sums of it away to help his family and others who were struggling with poverty. Born in a terraced house in Stoke-on-Trent, Caudwell went from bullied child to insecure trainee engineer at a local Michelin plant to self-made billionaire, befriending Sir Elton John, Eva Longoria, Hugh Grant and Robbie Williams, who have all taken part in his charity balls to raise money for Caudwell Children. It was at a car auction in 1987, the height of Mrs Thatcher's booming Britain, that he spotted the future. A mobile phone that came in an unwieldy suitcase. Within two decades Caudwell sold his Phones 4u business for 1.46 billion. Love, Pain & Money: The Making of a Billionaire retraces the inspirational journey, from the very shaky beginnings of his phone empire to owning yachts, private planes, a fleet of top flight cars, a Jacobean mansion in the Midlands and London's most expensive home (featured in a Channel 4 documentary). It's a fascinating insight into the drive, ambition, focus and vision required to become a billionaire. It is also a very British story. Caudwell is a man who – despite his vast wealth – still knows the price of a pint of milk, buys his clothes from Marks & Spencer and despite having swapped the Michelin plant for Michelin-starred restaurants and hotels, can often be found in a roadside B&B, eating home-made sandwiches after one of his many cycling expeditions. And it is more than merely a rags to riches story. It is a tale of battling endless career misfortunes and overcoming a series of personal tragedies to rise to the top. Failure, disaster and horrendous private heartbreaks are all part of this tale of a troubled child who never won the approval of his father who died when John was a teenager. Love, Pain & Money – The Making of a Billionaire is a tale of our times, full of humour, grit, lessons in business and an understanding of what it takes to succeed against all odds.
