El nombre del que ahora llamamos “Sun Tzu” (Sun Zi) se parece mucho al de Confucio (Kong Zi) y al de Lao Tzu (Lao Zi); es un título honorífico que le fue otorgado en generaciones posteriores. En la historia de China, solo los académicos y grandes pensadores y educadores podían llamarse “Zi”. Fue contemporáneo de Confucio (551-479 a. C.) durante el último período de la dinastía Zhou en la antigua China. Una época tumultuosa de frecuentes guerras entre muchos estados feudales.
