L'apparition d'une bête monstrueuse en 1866 dans plusieurs mers du globe défraie la chronique. L'animal, rapide, fusiforme et phosphorescent, est responsable de plusieurs naufrages, brisant le bois et l'acier des navires avec une force colossale. De retour d'une expédition dans le Nebraska, Pierre Aronnax, professeur suppléant au Muséum national d'histoire naturelle, émet l'hypothèse d'un narval géant. Les compagnies d'assurances maritimes menacent d'augmenter leurs prix et demandent que le monstre soit éliminé. Une grande chasse est alors organisée à bord de l’Abraham Lincoln, fleuron de la marine américaine, mené par le commandant Farragut. Aronnax reçoit une lettre du secrétaire de la Marine lui demandant de rejoindre l’expédition pour représenter la France. Le scientifique embarque avec son fidèle domestique flamand, Conseil. À bord, ils font la connaissance de Ned Land, harponneur originaire de Québec. Après des mois de navigation, la confrontation avec le monstre a enfin lieu, et l'Abraham Lincoln est endommagé. Un choc entre le monstre et la frégate projette Aronnax et Ned par-dessus bord. Conseil se jette alors à l'eau pour secourir son maître. Tous trois échouent finalement sur le dos du monstre, qui n'est autre qu'un sous-marin en tôle armée. Les naufragés sont faits prisonniers et se retrouvent à bord du mystérieux appareil. Ils font alors connaissance du capitaine Nemo, qui refuse de leur rendre la liberté. « Vous êtes venus surprendre un secret que nul homme au monde ne doit pénétrer, le secret de toute mon existence ! Et vous croyez que je vais vous renvoyer sur cette terre qui ne doit plus me connaître ! Jamais ! En vous retenant, ce n’est pas vous que je garde, c’est moi-même ! »

L'action se déroule au Griqualand en Afrique du Sud où l'ingénieur minier Cyprien Méré mène des études de chimie organique sur les gisements diamantifères. Le héros veut épouser Miss Alice Watkins, mais John Watkins, son père, refuse car Méré n'est pas assez riche. Méré se lance alors dans l'exploitation minière, en s'associant avec un brave quaker des États-Unis. L'exploitation minière étant en décalage avec ses études et une perte de temps quant à ses recherches scientifiques, selon sa bien-aimée, Cyprien se lance dans la confection d'un diamant artificiel avec lequel il pourra obtenir la main d'Alice. À la suite d'une expérience hasardeuse, il obtient un énorme diamant noir, surnommé « l'étoile du Sud ». Il offre ce cristal en dot à Mr. Watkins, mais la pierre disparaît peu de temps après avoir été taillée, lors d'une fête que donne ce dernier en l'honneur du joyau. L'étoile du Sud est aussi le symbole de l'hémisphère Sud.

Le narrateur est Axel Lidenbrock, neveu d’un éminent géologue et naturaliste allemand, le professeur de minéralogie Otto Lidenbrock. L’histoire commence le 24 mai 1863 à Hambourg et plus exactement dans la Königstraße, rue où est située la maison du Pr Lidenbrock. Le professeur, amateur de vieux livres, a acheté le manuscrit original d'une saga islandaise, Heimskringla, écrite par Snorre Turleson (Snorri Sturluson) au xiie siècle. Il y découvre un parchemin codé, rédigé en caractères runiques islandais. Lidenbrock se passionne aussitôt pour ce cryptogramme et tyrannise toute la maison tant qu'il lui résiste. Axel, d'abord peu enthousiaste, se prend peu à peu au jeu et finit par découvrir la clé du message par un coup de chance. Le parchemin se révèle être un message d'un certain Arne Saknussemm, un alchimiste islandais du xvie siècle, rédigé en latin mais écrit en runes. Celui-ci affirme avoir découvert un passage qui l'aurait mené jusqu'au centre de la Terre, via l'un des cratères d'un volcan éteint d'Islande, le Sneffels (l'actuel Snæfellsjökull).

Le roman relate le périple de Michel Strogoff, courrier du tsar de Russie Alexandre II, de Moscou à Irkoutsk, capitale de la Sibérie orientale. Sur cette route pleine d'obstacles, il croise la belle Nadia, ainsi que les journalistes européens Harry Blount et Alcide Jolivet. Les voyageurs mettent en général cinq semaines pour aller de Moscou à Irkoutsk. Les courriers du tsar n'ont besoin que d'à peine dix-huit jours pour parcourir cette distance. Michel Strogoff met trois mois, à cause de toutes les épreuves qu'il doit surmonter. Il se fera, entre autres, brûler les yeux et deviendra aveugle… Nadia, sa fidèle amie, le suit tout au long de son aventure. Ils se font passer pour frère et sœur.
