A certain man embarks on a business trip to Mexico. In the train, he finds himself alone in a compartment with someone who turns out to be a dangerous maniac. Another story being revised for Adolphe de Castro (the previous one being The Last Test). Lovecraft agreed to take it on solely because Castro paid upfront for the revisions. The writer struggled with this text, which held no promise, so for entertainment, he decided to mix horror and a bit of humor for the initiated (something he usually avoided and believed should not be done). Even the grotesque behavior of the madman on the train is spiced up with quotes from a certain German Lovecraft once traveled with to Washington.

A humorous tale of a fictional scholar from the 4th century, and his skull. The inspiration for the story stemmed from the mistaken belief of Maurice W. Moego's students that 'ibid.' (an abbreviation for the Latin 'ibidem,' meaning 'in the same place') was the author's surname. The piece, in the process, serves as a satire on academic erudition and the meticulousness of scholarly work.

The so-called 'Roman dream,' excerpted from a letter to Donald Wandrei dated November 2, 1927. In this dream, Lovecraft was a quaestor in one of the Spanish provinces under Roman rule. In the town of Pompeii, an ancient people threatened the city, performing terrifying rituals every year on the eve of November. This dream, rich in details and frightening in its suggestiveness, was inspired in the writer by reading the Aeneid translated by James Rhodes.

The narrator and his uncle delve into the history and secrets of the titular shunned house in Providence, where an astonishing number of people have died over generations. The Shunned House, as the first in Lovecraft's oeuvre, extensively utilizes the topography and family history of the author's native Providence. In the first part of the text, it resembles an extensive chronicle of the family residing in the titular 'shunned house.' The work also represents the author's first step into the realm of science fiction – the narrator attempts to explain the events unfolding in the context of the science of the early 20th century.

The main character of the story is Harry Houdini - the supposed author of the work, a magician, and a specialist in extraordinary escapes. During his trip to Egypt, his abilities are horrifyingly put to the test, and he confronts ancient nightmares in the underground chambers beneath the Sphinx. Lovecraft wrote the text on commission for the owner of 'Weird Tales.' Harry Houdini, the famous escape artist, had a column in the magazine in 1924. Writers who contributed to the magazine created stories with him as the protagonist, and H.P. Lovecraft was chosen as the author for one of them. The writer received an outline of the scenario upon which he was to create the story. The story seemed credible to him, but when he learned that it was entirely fictional, he requested creative freedom regarding the extent of fantastical elements. Houdini was thrilled with the story. He and Lovecraft became friends. The famous magician even helped H.P. Lovecraft look for work in New York. The story was published under Houdini's name, with a changed title: 'Imprisoned with the Pharaohs.'

The Horror in the Burying-Ground
A gravedigger in a certain village discovers a substance that gives the appearance of death to living beings. He intends to use it on his enemies, but in the end, he himself becomes a victim. The horror in the cemetery is distinguished by a slightly gallows humor and the rustic slang of the characters. The story at times resembles the works of the master of macabre, Ambrose Bierce. The last of the stories written by Lovecraft for Hazel Heald. Common to all of them is the motif of transformation and paralysis or incapacitation. Heald paid regularly, and H.P. Lovecraft didn't seem to complain about her, which cannot be said about other clients

The tale of a necrophiliac whose preferences are not understood by the owners of successive funeral homes employing him. The original title was 'Beloved Dead.' The story differs significantly from C. M. Eddy's previous two works that Lovecraft had improved. He had to intervene extensively in the narrative, perhaps even writing the entire text anew. This is evident, especially in the language of the piece, rich in epithets and typical expressions for Lovecraft.

This is a typical horror story featuring classic elements like ghosts, a secluded house in a desolate area, and werewolves. Initially rejected by 'Weird Tales,' the story was eventually accepted after revisions. Lovecraft emulated Eddy's writing style in parts, making it challenging to distinguish their contributions.
