A Word Is Not a Sparrow: A Benefit Anthology for Ukraine Relief
Artists in Ukraine have lost their livelihoods. The Ukraine Audiobook Relief Project was launched to support artists in Ukraine whose lives are threatened because of war. It is a fundamental aspect of war to suppress story, language, and culture. Moved by this crisis of culture, members of PANA (the Professional Audiobook Narrators Association) created this audiobook to raise money for Ukrainian relief. Joined by writers and musicians, we have volunteered our work to show our support for artists living through war. The profits from the sale of this audiobook will provide financial support to the Artists at Risk Connection in Ukraine through PEN America, a non-profit organization that endeavors to safeguard the right to artistic freedom of expression and ensure that artists and cultural professionals everywhere can live and work without fear. We urge you to support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine by supporting its artists. The folk wisdom of Ukraine includes this expression: “A word is not a sparrow … once it flies out, you won’t catch it.' A Word Is Not A Sparrow is a diverse anthology of stories set amid Russian repression through the centuries; personal narrator testimony about the impact in America of immigrant grandparents from Ukraine and elsewhere; powerful fables and allegories that deliver universal messages about displacement, migration, and human connection; and classic Cossack folk tales that are a touchstone of Ukrainian culture. Listen as we let these words fly out around the world. Narrated by PANA member volunteers Barry Abrams, Jennifer Jill Araya, Dave Arlington, Rosemary Benson, Anna Crowe, Claudia Dunn, Andrea Emmes, Gary Furlong, Rebecca Gallagher, Caroline Hewitt, Susan Iannucci, Elizabeth Jasicki, Tom Jordan, Jennifer March, Janet Metzger, Rich Miller, Erin Moon, Sara Morsey, Traci Odom, Sheri Saginor and Tiffany Williams. Though written in the 1930s, Anthem addresses controversial subjects in society that are still relevant today: equality, environment, sexism, mental health, the role of government. In revisiting this book and its many subjects, one keeps catching glimpses of understandings, and connections with our society today. The use of “we”—could it have a connection to the way we now declare our pronouns? The light he creates—could it have a connection to how man exploits the planet and is paying the price for it now? The Mating Hall—could it have a connection to the Me Too movement? The assumption that all must be happy, for there is no reason not to be—could it have a connection to our dawning understanding of mental health? Then, as you hear the struggles of the main character to grasp something just beyond his fingertips, you too may struggle to find your own understanding of what all this means in today’s world. Listen. And see what questions it brings to mind for you.

Feminine Shorts: Stories Reflecting the Challenges of Being Female at the Turn of the 20th Century
From the National Women’s History Alliance, by Bonnie Eisenberg and Mary Ruthsdotter, 1998: “1998 marked the 150th Anniversary of a movement by women to achieve full civil rights in this country. Over the past seven generations, dramatic social and legal changes have been accomplished that are now so accepted that they go unnoticed by people whose lives they have utterly changed. Many people who have lived through the recent decades of this process have come to accept blithely what has transpired. And younger people, for the most part, can hardly believe life was ever otherwise. They take the changes completely in stride, as how life has always been.” These stories were carefully chosen to reflect what life was once like for women—before the fight for rights was won. Let these stories reveal to this new generation, how it felt to live with oppression and fear, with no hope of real freedom. Take a journey from 1892 to 1921 through fictional stories, to understand the need for constant vigilance in striving for equal rights for all. Through the voices of these feminist authors, let us never forget from whence we came: “The Mark on the Wall” by Virginia Woolf“Tommy, the Sentimental” by Willa Cather“Daughters of the Late Colonel” by Katherine Mansfield“A Jury of Her Peers” by Susan Glaspell“The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte P. Gilman“The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin
