What Can We Learn from the Great Depression?: Stories of Ordinary People and Collective Action in Ha
Four stories of resilience, mutual aid, and radical rebellion that will transform how we understand the Great Depression Drawing on little-known stories of working people, What Can We Learn from the Great Depression? amplifies voices that have been long omitted from standard histories of the Depression era. In four tales, Professor Dana Frank explores how ordinary working people in the US turned to collective action to meet the crisis of the Great Depression and what we can learn from them today. Readers are introduced to - * the 7 daring Black women who worked as wet nurses and staged a sit-down strike to demand better pay and an end to racial discrimination - * the groups who used mutual aid, cooperatives, eviction protests, and demands for government relief to meet their basic needs - * the million Mexican and Mexican American repatriados who were erased from mainstream historical memory, while (often fictitious) white "Dust Bowl migrants" became enshrined - * the Black Legion, a white supremacist fascist organization that saw racism, antisemitism, anti-Catholicism, and fascism as the cure to the Depression While capitalism crashed during the Great Depression, racism did not and was, in fact, wielded by some to blame and oppress their neighbors. Patriarchy persisted, too, undermining the power of social movements and justifying women's marginalization within them. For other ordinary people, collective action gave them the means to survive and fight against such hostilities. What resulted were powerful new forms of horizontal reciprocity and solidarity that allowed people to provide each other with the bread, beans, and comradeship of daily life. The New Deal, when it arrived, provided vital resources to many, but others were cut off from its full benefits, especially if they were women or people of color. What Can We Learn from the Great Depression? shows us how we might look to the past to think about how we can shape the future of our own failed economy. These lessons can also help us imagine and build movements to challenge such an economy-and to transform the state as a whole-in service to the common good without replicating racism and patriarchy.

Parent Differently: Raise Kids with Biblical Character That Changes Culture
Most parents misguidedly prioritize behavior. The why and how to instill character. Behavior modification does not guarantee good character qualities. Character influences decisions. It’s evidenced in our speech, actions, and attitudes. It’s about who we are and what we do. The world competes for the hearts of our kids—and we see its negative impact in their pride, laziness, and entitlement. As Christians, however, we want to see the character of Jesus Christ in our children. Dads and moms, grandparents, and teachers all want to see their children grow in humility, gratitude, and respect—for others and themselves. We want our kids to be brave, compassionate, and joyful. We don’t want our kids to flounder through life. We want them to flourish and live into their God-given designs and callings. Dr. Kathy Koch helps us to that end by answering essential questions: - What is character and why does it matter? - Why is there a crisis of character? - What are the challenges in developing character? - How can we teach or improve character? Not only does character help us accomplish our goals, there are many other benefits of mature character: we will be blessed, stand out for Jesus, attract good friends, grow in wisdom, and live in freedom. Koch provides an invaluable resource for shepherding our children in godly character.

Know What You Signed Up For: How to Follow Jesus, Love People, and Live on Mission as a Military Spo
A field guide for military spouses who did not know what they'd signed up for. “You knew what you signed up for!” Megan B. Brown has heard that hint of condescension more times than she cares to remember. But did she? Honestly, no. She fell in love with a military man and had dreams of adventure. In much the same way, when we surrendered our lives to Jesus Christ, we really had no idea what we were “signing up for.” We were probably so overwhelmed by His love; we weren’t necessarily focused on the sacrifices that would follow. Five moves. Ten different houses. Four children. Two deployments to combat zones. Megan has discovered that this lifestyle takes its toll. She has sacrificed jobs, communities, friendships, and personal dreams. She has comforted children who’ve cried themselves to sleep over missing their father. She has bravely stood in the gap when her husband had boots on the ground somewhere else. In Know What You Signed Up For, Megan helps military spouses see that we’re right where we’re supposed to be—chosen for this specific time and place. We’ll find life in our roles as military spouses, mothers—or spiritual mothers. We’ll discover the passion of the gospel, the wisdom held in God’s Word, and the strengthening of His church. We’ll hear His call to be radically hospitable and unconditionally loving. Together, we’ll see what it means to follow Jesus, love people, and live on mission.
