With God in Russia: The Inspiring Classic Account of a Catholic Priest's Twenty-three Years in Sovie
“. . . a human and historical document of compelling interest.” — The Atlantic Powerful and inspirational, With God in Russia captures the heroic patience, endurance, and religious conviction of a man whose life embodied the Christian ideals that sustained him. While ministering in Eastern Europe during World War II, Polish-American priest Walter Ciszek, S.J., was arrested by the NKVD, the Russian secret police, shortly after the war ended. Accused of being an American spy and charged with ''agitation with intent to subvert,'' he was held in Moscow’s notorious Lubyanka prison for five years. The Catholic priest was then sentenced without trial to ten more years of hard labor and transported to Siberia, where he would become a prisoner within the forced labor camp system made famous in Alexsandr Solzhenitsyn’s Nobel Prize—winning book The Gulag Archipelago. In With God in Russia, Ciszek reflects on his daily life as a prisoner, the labor he endured while working in the mines and on construction gangs, his unwavering faith in God, and his firm devotion to his vows and vocation. Enduring brutal conditions, Ciszek risked his life to offer spiritual guidance to fellow prisoners who could easily have exposed him for their own gains. He chronicles these experiences with grace, humility, and candor, from his secret work leading mass and hearing confessions within the prison grounds, to his participation in a major gulag uprising, to his own ''resurrection''—his eventual release in a prisoner exchange in October 1963 which astonished all who had feared he was dead. “More than a superbly interesting adventure story, With God in Russia is a moving document of a man’s faith in his God and his God’s goodness in allowing him to live through his ordeal.” — The Advocate

Lincoln's Lieutenants: The High Command of the Army of the Potomac
From the best-selling author of Gettysburg, a multilayered group biography of the commanders who led the Army of the Potomac "A masterful synthesis . . . A narrative about amazing courage and astonishing gutlessness . . . It explains why Union movements worked and, more often, didn't work in clear-eyed explanatory prose that's vivid and direct." - Chicago Tribune The high command of the Army of the Potomac was a changeable, often dysfunctional band of brothers, going through the fires of war under seven commanding generals in three years, until Grant came east in 1864. The men in charge all too frequently appeared to be fighting against the administration in Washington instead of for it, increasingly cast as political pawns facing down a vindictive congressional Committee on the Conduct of the War. President Lincoln oversaw, argued with, and finally tamed his unruly team of lieutenants as the eastern army was stabilized by an unsung supporting cast of corps, division, and brigade generals. With characteristic style and insight, Stephen Sears brings these courageous, determined officers, who rose through the ranks and led from the front, to life and legend. "[A] massive, elegant study . . . A staggering work of research by a masterly historian." - Kirkus Reviews, starred review

How to Solve a Cold Case: And Everything Else You Wanted To Know About Catching Killers
Get inside the mind of an elite cold case detective and learn how to solve a murder. Despite advances in DNA evidence and forensic analysis, almost half of murder cases in Canada and the US remain unsolved. By 2016, the solved rate had dropped so significantly in the United States that it was the lowest in recorded history, with one in two killers never even identified, much less arrested and successfully prosecuted. And the statistics are just as bad in Canada. As a sought-after global expert and former detective, Arntfield has devoted his career to helping solve cold cases and serial murders, including the creation of the Western University Cold Case Society, which pairs students with police detectives to help solve crimes. In How to Solve a Cold Case, Arntfield outlines the history of cold case squads in Canada and the US, and lays out the steps to understanding and solving crime. Arntfield shows you what to look for, how to avoid common mistakes, recognize patterns and discover what others have missed. Weaving in case studies of cold crimes from across Canada and the US, as well as a chapter on how armchair detectives can get involved, How to Solve a Cold Case is a must-read for mystery fans and true crime buffs everywhere. The Customer-Funded Business: Start, Finance, or Grow Your Company with Your Customers' Cash
People starting ambitious new ventures, whether inside large companies or in their garages, often assume that the first thing they must do is raise some capital to fund their start-up. But there are significant drawbacks to raising capital too early Raising capital demands a lot of time and energy, distracting the founders from building the actual business. Raising capital too early means pitching the (still unverified) merit of the business idea to potential investors, rather than proving its merit among customers in the marketplace. Raising capital early leaves the founders with a lower ownership stake than might otherwise be the case, since most risks and unknowns are still unresolved. Raising capital early brings lots of baggage: tough terms and conditions that investors rightly require to offset the risks they take by backing an early stage venture. Raising capital is almost always very hard, and may not always be possible, particularly in difficult economic conditions! A smarter approach, explained in this book, is to use customer money to fund a new business or product. Drawing on the detailed stories of more than 20 young companies from around the world companies unknown and well-known, including both successes and failures the book identifies five different ways by which such customer funded business models can be built: Matchmaker models, Pay-In-Advance models, Subscription Models, Scarcity-based models, Service-to-Product models. What is most striking about these models is that each of them gives the company what accountants call negative working capital: that is, the company has the customers cash in hand before having to produce or pay for the goods or services it has sold. In exploring these models, we found perhaps surprisingly that most of them work for selling both goods and services. Further, we observed that, in almost every case, there was a queue of VCs lined up, eager to invest. Contrast that with the length of the typical queue that an early stage entrepreneur finds at his door: nil.

Linguistics: A Very Short Introduction
Linguistics falls in the gap between arts and science, on the edges of which the most fascinating discoveries and the most important problems are found. Rather than following the conventional organization of many contemporary introductions to the subject, the author of this stimulating guide begins his discussion with the oldest, 'arts' end of the subject and moves chronologically through to the newest research-the 'science' aspects. A series of short thematic chapters look in turn at such areas as the prehistory of languages and their common origins, language and evolution, language in time and space (the nature of change inherent in language), grammars and dictionaries (how systematic is language?), and phonetics. Explication of the newest discoveries pertaining to language in the brain completes the coverage of all major aspects of linguistics from a refreshing and insightful angle.

The Beats: A Very Short Introduction
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the writers of the Beat Generation revolutionized American literature with their iconoclastic approach to language and their angry assault on the conformity and conservatism of postwar society. They and their followers took aim at the hypocrisy and taboos of their time-particularly those involving sex, race, and class-in such provocative works as Jack Kerouac's On the Road (1957), Allen Ginsberg's 'Howl' (1956), and William S. Burroughs's Naked Lunch (1959). In this Very Short Introduction, David Sterritt offers a concise overview of the social, cultural, and aesthetic sensibilities of the Beats, bringing out the similarities that connected them and also the many differences that made them a loosely knit collective rather than an organized movement. Figures in the saga include Neal Cassady, Gregory Corso, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, John Clellon Holmes, Carolyn Cassady, and Gary Snyder. As Sterritt ranges from Greenwich Village and San Francisco to Mexico, western Europe, and North Africa, he sheds much light on how the Beats approached literature, drugs, sexuality, art, music, and religion.
