A self-centered healer, Stephen Strange is arrogant, but it's almost justified. After all, he is one of the best surgeons in the country. However, that all takes a dark turn following a horrific car crash. The doctor survives but at a great cost: his hands are irreparably damaged, and he can no longer perform surgery. No doctor can help him. Nor can faith healers or gurus. Nearing the end of his rope, he seeks out mystic help from the Ancient One, a man rumoured to possess unearthly talents. The Ancient One isn’t able to heal his hands, but he teaches Stephen the mystic arts as well as discipline, self-restraint, and, eventually, selflessness. These qualities soon lead him to clash with his fellow student, Baron Mordo. After completing his training, Doctor Strange leaves the temple and uses his magical powers to defend the Earth from arcane threats that few humans can conceive of— battling rival sorcerers, thwarting Nightmare, the malevolent ruler of dreams, and daring to defy the terrifying despot of the Dark Dimension, Dormammu. This creative novelization of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s original Doctor Strange stories sees Doctor Strange magically transform from a vain egoist to one of Earth’s greatest defenders.

Navigating Life with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis provides accessible, comprehensive, and up-to-date information about the challenges patients, family members, and caregivers face when confronted by ALS, a disease that affects approximately 5,600 Americans every year, with as many as 30,000 people managing the disease at any given time. This guide covers all aspects of managing ALS, from the onset of symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, and coping strategies to the use of home health care or hospice, and new research in the field. The book also sheds lights on difficult topics, such as end-of-life care and managing legal affairs. Navigating Life with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is unique because it covers two perspectives: one author is a neurologist with thirty years of experience treating ALS patients, and the other author experienced first-hand the issues in providing care for a parent with ALS. Formatted in a question-and-answer style, peppered throughout with patient stories, and with sections devoted to family members and caregivers, this compassionate resource provides guidance to those seeking to understand how to live with this disease.

Robots through the Ages: A Science Fiction Anthology
A remarkable collection, Robots through the Ages includes stories from some of the best writers of science fiction, both old and new. This anthology, with an introduction by Robert Silverberg, offers a sweeping survey of robots as depicted throughout literature. Since The Iliad—in which we are shown golden statues built by Hephaestus “with minds and wisdoms”—humans have been fascinated by the idea of artificial life. From the Argonautica to the medieval Jewish legend of the Golem and Ambrose Bierce’s tale of a chess-playing robot, the idea of what robots are—and who creates them—can be drastically different. This book collects a broad selection of short stories from celebrated authors such as Philip K. Dick, Seanan McGuire, Roger Zelazny, Connie Willis, and many more. Robots through the Ages not only celebrates the history of robots and the genre of science fiction, but the dauntless nature of human ingenuity.

Jhāna Consciousness: Buddhist Meditation in the Age of Neuroscience
An interdisciplinary deep dive into Buddhist jhāna meditation and how it can transform our understanding of self and consciousness States of profound meditative concentration, the jhānas are central to the earliest Buddhist teachings. For centuries in Southeast Asia, oral yogāvacara (yoga practitioner) lineages kept traditional jhāna practices alive, but in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, reforms in Theravāda Buddhism downplayed the importance of jhāna in favor of vipassanā (insight) meditation. Some began to consider the jhānas to be strictly the domain of monastics, unattainable in the context of modern lay life. In recent years, however, there has been a resurgence of interest in the jhānas, and as researcher Paul Dennison shows, the esoteric and sometimes 'magical' pre-reform practices of Southeast Asia hold powerful potential for modern lay practitioners living in a more scientifically minded world. Drawing on traditional Buddhist doctrine, teachings from lesser-known meditation texts such as the Yogāvacara's Manual, and findings from the first in-depth, peer-reviewed neuroscience study of jhāna meditation, Dennison unpacks this ancient practice in all its nuance while posing novel questions about perception, subjectivity, and the nature of enlightenment.

The Council Gods Are Brutal. The Lesser Gods Are Worse. I'm All That Stands Between Them... You won't find me in the lore of the gods, but I'm there, hidden between the lines. Whenever the lesser gods torture humanity, creating armies of supernatural beasts to rain hell down on the innocent, it's my job to stand against the tidal wave of pain and death. I like my job. It's fun, even if the gods are a bunch of bastards. But in the thousands of years I've been running this gig, I've never seen the lesser gods pull together as a team. They've always been way too selfish and power-hungry for that. Until now, apparently. Perses, one of the lesser gods, has somehow managed to corral them into a unit of death and destruction, and the council has recognized their creation--me--isn't capable of handling it alone. So, for the first time since I've been doing this, I'm being forced to run a team of people who need to learn the ins and outs of what I do. It ain't easy, especially since my new crew wasn't exactly built for this kind of mayhem. That's what happens when you take a bunch of normals and gift them with immortality, I suppose. If we fail, the lesser gods will find their way onto the council, and that'll spell doom for the world as we know it. My name is Grave Digger, and this is my story.

Nonduality: In Buddhism and Beyond
One of Western Buddhism's most sophisticated thinkers on one of Buddhism's most central topics. The concept of nonduality lies at the very heart of Mahayana Buddhism. In the West, it's usually associated with various kinds of absolute idealism in the West, or mystical traditions in the East-and as a result, many modern philosophers are poorly informed on the topic. Increasingly, however, nonduality is finding its way into Western philosophical debates. In this analysis of the philosophies of nondualism of (Hindu) Vedanta, Mahayana Buddhism, and Taoism, renowned thinker David R. Loy extracts what he calls 'a core doctrine' of nonduality. Loy clarifies this easily misunderstood topic with thorough, subtle, and understandable analysis.
