Religio Medici: The Religion of a Doctor
'Religio Medici: The Religion of a Doctor' (1643) by Sir Thomas Browne is an explanation and analysis of the author's religious belief in relation to his profession as a medical doctor. As such, it is a spiritual testament and a psychological self-portrait based on the Christian virtues of faith, hope and charity. In the preface, Browne explains that his text is not a scholarly work, requesting that it be approached by a mind informed by faith and open to accepting his self-exploration. The first part explores faith and hope; and the second, charity. In his ruminations on concepts like time, eternity, and predestination, he describes the different paths that led him to be an orthodox Anglican. 'Religio Medici' was an inspiration to the Romantic writers of Europe

'The Awakening' is an 1899 novel by Kate Chopin set in New Orleans and the Gulf coast at the end of the 19th century. It is widely seen as a seminal work of early feminism which put the spotlight on women's issues. The story is about Edna Pontellier, the wife of a New Orleans businessman, who falls in love with Robert Lebrun, a man she meets at a resort on the Gulf of Mexico. When the family returns to New Orleans, Edna isolates herself from society and withdraws from some of the duties customarily associated with motherhood. Edna has two friends that give her opposite advice: her close friend Adèle Ratignolle and the pianist Mademoiselle Reisz who lives a life of independence. Ultimately Robert withdraws from Edna's life, claiming in a note that he refuses to shame her in the eyes of society. The combination of realistic narrative, psychological complexity and social commentary makes 'The Awakening' a forerunner of American modernist literature and prefigures the works of novelists like William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway.

Edward McKendree Bounds (1835-1913) was a Methodist minister and devotional writer. Addressed primarily to preachers and pastors, 'Power Through Prayer' has also been popular among lay people for over a century. The book expounds the idea that prayer is the life-giving force behind the ministry. He states that believers depend on God just as much as he depends on them, and that, although the relationship is simple, it requires a lot of communication. Bounds discusses the essentiality of prayer, tendencies to be avoided, the primacy of the heart over the head, and gives examples of praying men from the scriptures.

'Ethan Frome' is a 1911 book by Edith Wharton, set in the fictitious town of Starkfield, Massachusetts. In this haunting tale, Wharton's characters are not of the upper class, but ordinary townsfolk. The prologue opens with an unnamed male narrator who's spending a winter in Starkfield while on business, describing a limping man with a compelling demeanor. The narrative is characterized by frequent flashbacks, and mainly involves Ethan's sickly wife, Zeena, and Mattie, a cousin who helps to care for her. When Ethan and Mattie fall in love, Zeena insists that Mattie be sent away. In the final chapter, the prologue's narrator returns, revealing a shocking role reversal that had occurred twenty years before.

'Heart of Darkness', the famous novella by Joseph Conrad, first published in 1902, reveals the disgust at the cruelty that the author observed when he worked briefly in the Belgian Congo. Although no territory is named in the text, the story is based on a journey that Conrad took up the Congo River in 1890, during King Leopold II of Belgium's abusive rule of the area. The main narrative follows the journey of the ferry-boat captain Marlow in his job as an ivory transporter on the river. Marlow's other assignment is to return Kurtz, another ivory trader, to Europe. The severely ill Kurtz dies on the journey after handling Marlow a collection of papers. Back in Europe, Marlow gives these to a journalist instead of the parties for which they were intended. 'Heart of Darkness' is a story of many layers and nuances, not only about exploitation but also about the emptiness which follows when the delusion behind certain lofty ideals is exposed.

Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death
'Give me liberty, or give me death!' is a quotation attributed to Patrick Henry, from his speech to the Second Virginia Convention on 23 March, 1775, at St. John's Church in Richmond, Virginia. Henry spoke without notes, and no transcript of his exact words have survived. The only known version of his speech was reconstructed in the early 1800s by William Wirt, a biographer who corresponded with various attendees of the convention.
