Im Gegensatz zum ersten Band, bei dem Spielkarten als durchgehendes Thema dienen, baut Carroll hier die Handlung des Buches rund um eine Schachpartie auf. Die Züge dieser Schachpartie werden zu Beginn des Buches präsentiert, die - mit einigen Ausnahmen - eine reguläre Partie darstellen. Ausnahmen sind: Weiß bewegt den König nicht aus einer Schachkonstellation; anstelle der Regel, dass Weiß und Schwarz abwechselnd ziehen, tritt die, dass Alice, die in der Partie die Rolle des weißen Damenbauers eingenommen hat, abwechselnd mit einer der beiden Farben am Zuge ist. Auch ist es hier den Figuren möglich, nach einem Schlag auf den alten Platz zurück-zukehren. Besonders bekannt sind das Nonsensgedicht 'Jabberwocky', das Ei auf der Mauer 'Humpty Dumpty' und die Zwillinge 'Tweedledee und Tweedledum'.
